Establish what is defined before calculating
List the controlling dimensions and geometric relationships, then identify the requested unknown. Autodesk defines a fully constrained sketch as one whose geometry has its size and position completely defined through dimensions and constraints. This is a useful geometric test, though a fully constrained CAD sketch alone does not establish a complete manufacturing specification. [1]
For example, a hole known only to lie on a specified bolt circle still has an undetermined angular location. A circle diameter cannot recover that missing degree of freedom. Likewise, a triangle's side lengths may leave a mirrored placement unless orientation is established. Use stated constraints; do not invent symmetry or perpendicularity from appearance. Never scale a screenshot, scan or printed view to manufacture a missing dimension.
Define the coordinate frame and angle convention
Write down the origin, positive X and Y directions, view direction, length units, angle-zero direction and positive rotation. A rear view or mirrored coordinate system can change signs. For the examples below, X points right, Y points up, and positive angles run counterclockwise from +X in the shown plane.
In this convention, a point at radius R and angle θ from center (x₀,y₀) has x=x₀+R cos θ and y=y₀+R sin θ. These are nominal plane-geometry calculations using the standard trigonometric functions. [2] Keep degrees and radians explicit: θrad=θdeg×π/180. Many programming functions expect radians; confirm your calculator's input mode. [3]
Example: locate a hole on a bolt circle
Illustrative nominal example: a bolt circle has D=100 mm, so R=D/2=50 mm. Its center is the coordinate origin, and the hole is at 30° counterclockwise from +X. Therefore x=50 cos 30°=25√3 mm≈43.301270189 mm and y=50 sin 30°=25 mm. Displayed to three decimal places, the coordinate is (43.301 mm, 25.000 mm). The extra displayed digits are not a tolerance.
Check the result independently: √(x²+y²)=50 mm and both coordinates are positive, as expected in the first quadrant. For an explicitly equally spaced pattern of n holes, use θk=θ₀+k(360°/n), with k=0 through n−1. The drawing must establish the pattern count, spacing and starting orientation; a circular arrangement in a picture is insufficient.
Example: recover a distance and direction
Illustrative nominal example: a right triangle has perpendicular legs 4 and 3 in the same length unit. Its hypotenuse is √(4²+3²)=5. Taking the endpoint displacement as Δx=4 and Δy=3 gives θ=atan2(3,4)≈36.8699° counterclockwise from +X. Verify that 5 cos θ≈4 and 5 sin θ≈3. The right-angle relationship is essential; the same two side lengths in an arbitrary triangle would not establish this result.
Use atan2(Δy,Δx) to preserve quadrant information, rather than atan(Δy/Δx). Python's documentation explicitly identifies the argument signs as determining the quadrant and returns the angle in radians. Other software may use a different argument order, so check its documentation. [3] If both displacements are zero, there is no geometric direction to recover.
Example: calculate a conical taper angle
Illustrative nominal example: a straight conical taper changes diameter from 40 mm to 30 mm across an axial length of 50 mm. The radial change is (40−30)/2=5 mm. Thus the half-angle to the axis is α=atan(5/50)≈5.7106°, and the included angle is 2α≈11.4212°. This is a right-triangle construction in an axial section. [2]
Using the 10 mm diameter difference directly as the triangle's radial leg would give the wrong angle. Also distinguish axial length from length along the sloped surface. Identify whether the drawing specifies an included angle, half-angle, diameters or another taper convention before calculating. These example numbers describe ideal geometry, not an accepted taper class or fit.
Preserve exact relationships and manage rounding
Keep the original inputs, formulas and full calculation precision in the worksheet or CAD construction. Round only the displayed result or an explicitly approved output. In the bolt-circle example, 25√3 is the exact nominal X coordinate; 43.301 is a rounded representation. Feeding rounded coordinates into another calculation can introduce an avoidable discrepancy.
Label derived values so reviewers can distinguish them from driving requirements. Autodesk distinguishes driving dimensions, which control geometry, from driven dimensions, which report a calculated value. That distinction is useful when documenting a construction, but it does not authorize changing the drawing's acceptance requirements. [4]
Keep nominal calculations separate from ISO requirements
ISO 129-1 addresses presentation of dimensions and associated tolerances; its public scope explicitly excludes the application and meaning of dimensional tolerances. A trigonometric calculation therefore cannot assign a design tolerance. [5] Use the governing drawing standard, edition and contractual requirements. Do not casually translate ISO GPS indications into ASME requirements or treat their defaults as interchangeable.
Apply a general-tolerance standard only when the drawing or contract invokes it, and within its scope. ISO 2768-1 addresses specified categories of linear and angular dimensions without individual tolerance indications. It is not permission to attach a fresh tolerance to every calculated coordinate. [6] Derived reference dimensions should not create duplicate, conflicting acceptance requirements. Inspect the functional features and datum relationships actually specified.
Resolve precedence and share a traceable calculation
Confirm the drawing and model revisions and which document governs when their information differs. There is no universal rule that the model always wins or the drawing always wins. Ask the design authority to resolve conflicting or incomplete definitions before production.
For an RFQ, send the controlled files plus the calculation's inputs, coordinate convention, formulas, units and rounding note. Identify unresolved constraints separately. Review the fully defined drawing checklist, drawing tolerance guidance and inspection planning guide, then request a drawing and manufacturing review. A transparent nominal calculation helps everyone review the same geometry.
Check the nominal geometry
A small calculation workpad
All linear values must use the same unit. Angles are in degrees. Bolt-circle origin is the circle center, with positive angles counterclockwise from +X. These calculations produce nominal geometry only; they do not assign tolerances or authorize a drawing change.
Questions before you quote
Can trigonometry recover any missing dimension?
Only when the supplied geometry uniquely determines it. Missing position, orientation or other constraints may leave several valid answers.
Does a calculated coordinate become an acceptance limit?
No. It is a nominal derived value. The governing drawing, standards and approved requirements determine acceptance.
Why use atan2 instead of ordinary arctangent?
atan2 uses both signed coordinate differences to determine the quadrant. Confirm argument order and degree/radian handling in your software.
